The rules of ultimate

In five easy steps!

Aim of the Game

The aim of the game is to score goals. The first team to 17 goals wins (or the team with the highest score at the end of time wins (matches are normally 90-100 minutes).

Each time the offense completes a pass into the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point.

Step
1

Game Play

Games are played on a rectangular field with endzones at each end. Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone. The defense throws (``pulls``) the disc to the offense.

The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players can't run with the disc, similar to netball.

When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

Step
2

Teams

Teams are made up of as many players as you’d like, however only 7 players play at a time (5 players for indoor ultimate). During mixed gender matches, teams must field a 4-3 gender mix of players at all times.

Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score or during an injury timeout.

Step
3

Self-regulated

Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.

When a player initiates contact on another player, a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

Step
4

Spirit of the Game

Ultimate relies upon a Spirit of the Game that places the responsibility for fair play on every player. There are no referees. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

Complete Rules

Brisbane Ultimate adheres to the WFDF standard rules for Ultimate Frisbee. The interactive HTML version of the WFDF rules can be found via the link to the right.

Rules Accreditation

Knowing the rules of ultimate is crucial to fair, and safe play. As ultimate is a self-regulated sport, every player has the opportunity to make calls or dispute calls made against them. Knowing the rules is the crucial first step in this process.

All Brisbane Ultimate leagues and must events require that players are WFDF standard rules accredited to be eligible to play. It is advised that captains are advanced rules accredited, though this is not mandatory.

Standard Accreditation

The WFDF standard accreditation is an open book quiz for new, beginner and intermediate level players. It is free to complete and is valid for a 12 month period.
